DEATH® IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK
THE MUSIC OF DAVID HACKNEY
From
the
beginning
of
playing
music
with
his
brothers
Dannis
and
Bobby
right
from
their
first
band
“RockFire
Funk
Express”,
to
“Death”,
and
then
into
“The
4Th
Movement”,
David
was
committed
to
expressing
the
original
music
of
their
groups
highlighted
by
the
songwriting
of
David
and
Bobby
collectively
and individually.
David
wrote
songs
and
recorded
songs
and
ideas
on
a
non-stop
cycle
from
1973
to
the
time
of
his
“Life
Without
End”
transition
in
2000.
Some
are
finished
productions,
some
are
studio
tracks,
some
are
tracks
recorded
in
Death’s
experimental
production
environment
they
affectionately
referred
to
as
“The
Room”,
and
then
there
are
some
that
is
David
simply
playing
to
an
analog
reel-to
-reel
machine
as
it
was
recording.
All
recordings
represent
the
vision,
determination,
raw
Rock
power,
and
artistry
that
has
made
David
Hackney
such
a
prolific
figure
in
the world of Rock music.
Aside
from
being
a
gifted
guitarist,
David
Hackney
focused
his
entire
musical
and
artistic
ability
into
his
songwriting.
Channeling
expressions
of
deep
inner-feelings
through
the
melodic six strings of his guitar.
When
lyrics
were
required
on
any
of
David’s
songs,
he
mainly
looked
to
his
brother
Bobby
who
started
writing
poetry
at
age
8,
although
David
would
from
time
to
time
pen
lyrics
to
some
of
his
songs.
In
the
experience
of
this
web
center,
you
will
hear
some
of
those
selections
which
have
never
been
heard
publicly
before
and
can
only
be
found
here,
in
David’s
house,
in
one
of
his
rooms.
Throughout
David’s
musical
life,
he
seemed
to
sense
the
urgency
to
record
and
document
as
much
as
he
could,
the
wealth
of
songs,
melodies
,
and
ideas
that
were
constantly
echoing
from
within his mind and spirit.
Be
it
a
simple
cassette
tape
machine,
a
reel
to
reel
tape
machine,
or
a
state-of-the-art
multi-track
recording
unit,
David
was
always
immersed
in
recording
and
putting
ideas
on
tape,
creating
and
producing
a
physical
catalog
of
song
ideas,
concepts,
and
song
snippets.
You
will
find
distinct
selections
of
those ideas, concepts, and snippets in this web center.
OUT-TAKES AND RAW CUTS
These
two
images
go
together
because
this
was
David’s
work-
shop.
The
place
where
all
three
brothers
came
together
to
create,
rehearse,
produce,
and
record.
They
affectionately
called
this
place
“The
Room”,
which
was
their
bedroom
in
their
Mother’s
home
which
Mom
allowed
them
to
transform
into
a
musical studio and retreat to refine all of their musical skills.
This
room
is
where
David
spent
most
of
his
waking
hours.,
writing
songs,
experimenting
with
various
recording
and
microphone
techniques,
and
putting
ideas
and
sounds
on
tape
creating
a
vast
amount
of
raw
cuts,
out-takes,
concepts,
and
song
bits
and
pieces
that
demonstrate
a
vision
far
ahead
of
it’s
time.
In
the
experience
of
this
web
center,
you
will
discover
some of those out-takes and raw cuts. Enjoy!
As
seen
in
the
film
“A
Band
Called
Death”,
David
had
quite
a
lot
to
say
and
express
about
the
topics
of
Life,
Death,
the
future,
Biblical Prophesies, Getting High, and Spiritual Enlightenment.
Working
with
limited
analog
and
reel-to-reel
equipment
in
the
70s,
David
experimented
with
microphone
placement
and
various
sound
frequency
vibrations
to
create
we
he
called
“Sound
Art”,
recording
both
experimental
pieces
and
spoken
word segments separately onto tape.
